Lake Oconee Information

Lake Oconee was built in 1980 when Georgia Power Company completed the Wallace Dam. It is located along the Oconee River and has provided electricity for many Georgians. The water in Lake Oconee is recycled from Lake Sinclair to produce electricity. Lake Oconee is the second largest lake in Georgia.

Lake Oconee covers parts of three counties: Putnam, Greene and Morgan. The lake has approximately 375 miles of shoreline. Lake Oconee is fed by the Oconee and Apalachee Rivers.

Recreation areas on Lake Oconee include golf courses designed by Jack Nicklaus, fishing areas, country clubs, and two 85 acre recreational areas operated by the Georgia Power Company. The lake is home to over 350 pounds of fish per acre, making it one of the best fishing lakes in the southeast!

Lake Oconee is a scenic resort area tucked away in one of the most beautiful areas of the state. The lake is easily accessible, being located just a short drive from Atlanta, Athens and Augusta. The houses along the shores range from large permanent homes to weekend retreats.

Clubs around the lake include Great Waters, Reynolds Plantation, Port Armor, and The Harbor Club. Depending upon your tastes, you can choose from tennis, golf, swimming, boating, horseback riding, volleyball, skiing, fishing and much more. Lake Oconee is treasured by Georgians as being one of the best places to enjoy southern life.
